Crazy Costume Critiques: The Vibrant Man Edition

Where do I start? These are all screen shots taken by me from various music videos, movies, dramas and youtube videos. No infringement of any kind is intended. Everything is the property of their rightful owners and all that jazz.
Now that that boring stuff is out of the way, let's look at the clothes!!! Focus on the clothes not the guys! ;)

This guy was the start of this post. I actually squealed in the middle of a conversation when I saw those bunny pjs pop onto the screen behind us. Thankfully my friends laughed and said, "Only you, Emily."
All I can say is, "I need a boy to dress up in those stripy pants and cute vest... "

When you get up in the morning you put a jacket on, at least that seems to be what I noticed most about these guys!

I love the color and texture of this jacket! And the mandarin collar. I really like mandarin collars.

Another AMAZING jacket. I don't know how many times I rewound the music video trying to get a screen shot of this.

Texture and print again.  Dude, you can look as upset as you want as long as you let me pet your jacket. It's nothing personal I just like your fabric...

This jacket looked way cooler in the video than this screenshot. It really looked like a hoodie made from two different types of fabrics... It looked so cozy I wanted to make one.

Now I know there is a Dudette in this photo but both jackets were so amazing I didn't have the heart to crop it out. I'll take one of each please.

Moving on to shirts? Sweaters worn as shirts? I don't know but they're cool!

I like the juxtaposition of a tshirt with a fancy suit jacket but what I really love is that stripy knitted shirt! Is that super cool or what? What a fun look for guys.

Giant fuzzy houndstooth! Nuff said.

Sparkly bow tie! Bow ties are cool! 

Now I love polka dots but I never thought about them as a viable guy option until this. I like it. What do you think? Can guys pull of polka dots?

But the vibrant winner of today's Man Style is......

This makes me laugh and laugh. Only in drama land.... talk about some print mixing! Do you know any man who could pull this off in real life? Would you want him to? 

But wait, that's not all... He also wins the award for best accessory! I literally had to stop and rewind because I couldn't believe my eyes! This is why I love learning about other countries! 

"Hey, Dude! What'cha doing wandering around this late at night?"
"Oh, you know, nothing much. Just munching on my dried squid before
I head to bed. You want a bite?"

 So what do you think? What do the men in your life wear? Do they get adventurous with prints or colors? I'm very curious!

Crazy Costume Critiques: The Marvelous Moonacre Edition

Well today didn't go at all as planned so I thought we'd might as well drift off into another land and discuss the world of Moonacre. This whole movie felt like a forgotten dream which I later realized was because I HAD read the book as a teen. (Check it out, much better than the movie. "The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge)
As soon as it opens you're faced with a mode of dress that has never been seen in our world...

Is this what the framework of a bustle looks like? They just chose to wear it on the outside? 

 Highly decorated backsides seems to be a theme of the movie because if we're not running around in one of the backward bustles we're running around with a small fabric store tacked on the back.

Unless were escaping and have to leave our hoops behind then we must run around with the pillow attached to our bums.

 If this wasn't enough the highly detailed use of accessories would let us know we're not in Kansas anymore.

"I have the scariest mask you've ever seen" gives way to "Cameo Momento" to "it looks spiky but it's soft and tender like my heart"

I have a feeling the costume department must have had a lot of fun with this movie. Every thing is so lush and layered when it's not totally random.

Tons of beading and embroidery! This movie gives love to the men of the cast as well
 Everyone gets a jacket and waistcoat and don't forget the cravat. After all we are on a safari.

When we're not distracted by the back of the gowns the fronts present an equally
dazzling array of embellishment and detail.

But the real masterpiece of this movie is this red velvet beauty. I couldn't narrow down the photos because it moves and drapes so beautifully. You can almost feel the weight of this dress in the way she moves and the velvet glows, begging to be caressed.

You can also see the backgrounds are just as lush as the costuming. I love everything about this story. Have you ever seen it or read the book? Psst, it's on Netflix...
After seeing it I dare you not to pick up any beading or embroidery on your next sewing project!

Crazy Costume Critiques: An Introduction

DISCLAIMER! This is not a rejection or an endorsement of the actual content of  the tv show or movie. These are purely my thoughts on some of the costumes. The only reason I'm calling it a critique is because I love alliteration. All photos are either screenshots I have taken or have links to where I sourced them online. No copyright infringement is intended.

Crazy Costume Critiques!!!

It wasn't until my college friends gave me blank stares and started laughing when I mentioned the movie The Ten Commandments was not only a good movie but "had beautiful fabrics" that I realized maybe it wasn't normal to pay so much attention to the textiles on the silver screen. Apparently google agrees with them since I can't find any photos of the scene I'm looking for. Remember when Moses returns at the beginning of the movie, marches into the great hall with all his plunder and unrolls huge bolts of fabric that ripple down Pharaoh's grand hall. You know what I'm talking about. Looking back, the whole movie is full of lush costuming. I was able to snatch one screen shot from a YouTube clip.

The moment that movies became a source of inspiration is forever impressed in my memory. It comes from the Princess Bride. There I was a happy young teenager engrossed in this hilarious fairy tale when this happened!

Less than 30 seconds of footage; lifelong impact. I was transported into gorgeous dress land; that silvery blue dress rippling and sparkling as it fell against the dark night sky. I think it is one of the best cinematic dress moments of all time! Argue with me if you dare!!

Then the other day as I was putting on a movie for my not-nieces and nephew I realized maybe the cinema has had an even earlier impact on my sewing journey.

The Tailor of Gloucester by Beatrix Potter

Look! Real Pattern piece shapes. 

How can you not love the adorable little mice working away? 

They have such detailed and lovely clothes.

Then and now I am captivated by the exquisite detail shown even in the closeups of the embroidery.

While we had only The Tailor of Gloucester on VHS they've now boxed all of these wonderfully filmed tales together into a DVD set. They are fabulously well done and I'm not being paid to say that. 

Since I now work with fabric and sewing patterns on a daily basis I find myself noticing even more details as I watch TV. Costume Critiques will be a semi regular feature of me sharing my crazy observations with you! So am I certifiable? Do you remember a specific moment when you were lifted out of a movie by a costume?
